It's officially pool-and-barbecue season in Stockton, which means it's also the season people come to me wanting a glow. Here's my standing offer as someone who spends her days looking at sun damage up close: let me give you the tan, and let the sun keep its UV. An airbrush spray tan delivers the color without a single ray of damage — but the difference between a gorgeous, even glow and a streaky mess comes down to what you do before and after. So let's walk through it.
Why airbrush beats the booth
A booth sprays everyone the same way: same pattern, same angles, no judgment calls. An airbrush tan is applied by hand — by me — which means I adjust for the reality of your actual body. Drier zones like knees, elbows, and ankles grab more color, so they get a lighter pass. Contours get followed instead of ignored. And the shade itself is matched to your skin tone rather than a one-formula-fits-all default, which is precisely how you avoid the dreaded orange. The custom approach is the whole reason this service earns its spot on my menu.
Prep: the work happens before you arrive
An even tan is built on even skin. Here's your checklist:
- Exfoliate the day before — head to toe, with extra attention to knees, elbows, ankles, and feet. Dead skin cells grab extra color and then flake off unevenly, taking your tan with them.
- Shave or wax at least 24 hours ahead — freshly opened pores can collect solution and look dotted.
- Arrive with bare skin — no lotion, no oil, no deodorant, no makeup on tanning areas. Anything sitting on the skin acts as a barrier and creates light patches.
- Wear loose, dark clothing — the cosmetic bronzer can transfer onto tight clothes, and dark fabric keeps that invisible.
The session and the development window
The appointment itself is quick and easy — the solution goes on in a fine, cool mist, section by section, and you're done in well under half an hour. You'll leave with a visible bronze tint; that's the guide color, there to show me (and you) exactly where the solution went. The real tan develops underneath over the following hours as the active ingredient works with the surface of your skin.
During the development window — usually 8 to 12 hours, and I'll tell you your exact timing — avoid water, sweat, and tight clothing. Plan your workout for before your appointment, not after, and maybe don't book a spray tan the same evening as a June wedding with outdoor dancing. Ask me how I know.
Aftercare: making it last
Your first shower should be lukewarm and soap-light; don't panic when bronzer washes down the drain — the tan stays. From then on, the secret to a long, even fade is simple: moisturize daily, every inch. Hydrated skin holds color; dry skin flakes it off in patches. Keep showers shortish, pat dry instead of rubbing, and go easy on chlorine — pool time will soften any tan faster. Done right, you'll get seven to ten days of even color, and a fade so gradual nobody can point to the day it left.
On timing: if the tan is for a specific occasion — a wedding, a reunion, a vacation — book it two days before the event. That gives the color a full development, one rinse, and a day to settle into its most natural-looking self. It also leaves a comfortable buffer if your schedule shifts. First-timers sometimes like a trial run a few weeks ahead, which I fully endorse; it takes the guesswork out of the big week.
One thing a spray tan doesn't do: protect you from the sun. You'll still need your SPF every day — I wrote a whole Central Valley sunscreen guide on exactly that. And if you're curious about pricing or anything else before you book, get in touch — I'm happy to walk you through it.

How long does an airbrush spray tan last?
Typically 7 to 10 days with good aftercare. Daily moisturizing, quick lukewarm showers, and patting (not rubbing) dry all extend the life of the tan. Long hot baths, chlorinated pools, and aggressive exfoliation shorten it.
Will a spray tan turn me orange?
Not when it's applied by hand at the right depth for your skin tone. Orange results come from poorly matched solution or over-application. With an airbrush I build the color gradually and match it to your natural undertone — the goal is you, after a good vacation.
What should I wear to a spray tan appointment?
Loose, dark clothing and sandals or loose shoes for afterward. During the session you wear whatever you're comfortable in — many clients choose an old swimsuit or undergarments. Anything tight against the skin right after can rub the developing color.
When can I shower after a spray tan?
Follow the development window we set at your session — usually 8 to 12 hours, depending on the solution used. Your first rinse should be lukewarm water only, no scrubbing. Some bronzer will wash off; that's the cosmetic guide color, not your tan.
