Self-Care Through the Holidays: Book Time for Yourself First

By Jamie Sanchez, Licensed Esthetician · November 2024 · Truth In Beauty, Stockton CA

Thanksgiving is here, and I can see the next six weeks coming the way you can see weather rolling in across the valley. Between now and New Year's, your calendar will fill with everyone else: the parties, the shopping, the school concerts, the relatives, the cooking, the wrapping. Then sometime in early January you'll look up, exhausted, and realize you never once appeared on your own schedule. This post is me asking you — before the season swallows you whole — to book one hour that is only yours.

The calendar math nobody does

Here's what I see from inside the studio every single year: December appointments don't fill gradually — they vanish in clumps. Party weeks go first, then the pre-Christmas stretch, then the quiet days between the holidays. I'm a solo practitioner; there is exactly one of me, one treatment room, and hours that run Tuesday through Friday 9 to 6 and Saturday 9 to 2. If you wait until you desperately need that hour, it very likely won't exist. Book it now, while the calendar still has room for you, and then guard it like any other unmovable appointment — because that's exactly what it should be. One more piece of math worth doing: an hour in the studio costs you sixty minutes. The frazzled, running-on-empty version of you costs far more than that, every single day, in patience and presence you can't give anyone.

What an hour of actual quiet does

My studio isn't a bustling spa with a locker room and a waiting list murmuring outside. It's one quiet room, one person focused entirely on you, and nobody on the other side of the door. Clients tell me the silence is half the treatment, and after thirty-plus years I believe them. Whether your hour goes to a customized facial, massage therapy, or reflexology, the nervous system gets the same message: nothing is required of you right now. In a season built entirely on being required, that message is medicine. You can browse everything I offer on the services page — though honestly, the skin analysis at the start of your appointment will find what you need better than any menu can.

Your skin is keeping score too

Holiday stress isn't abstract. Less sleep, more sugar, more wine, colder air outside and heater-dried air inside — skin shows every bit of it. Most Decembers I watch a parade of tired, dehydrated, reactive faces walk in, attached to people who spent the month keeping everyone else glowing. One unhurried session mid-season keeps small problems small: hydration replaced before the tightness sets in, congestion cleared before it blooms, the barrier supported before January's repair bill comes due. Think of it as maintenance on the household's most essential appliance: you.

Permission, in writing

If booking time for yourself feels indulgent while your to-do list is long, consider this your permission slip from a licensed professional: rest is not a reward you earn by finishing everything. You will never finish everything. The all-inclusive model exists partly for this exact reason — you book the time, and the treatment builds itself around whatever you need that day. No decisions, no menu anxiety, no upsell conversation. Decision-making is precisely the thing you need a vacation from.

And if the person running on fumes is someone you love rather than you, a gift certificate does this whole job in an envelope — I wrote about how those work earlier this month.

A thank-you before the rush

Since it's Thanksgiving week, let me say it plainly: thank you. Some of you have sat in my chair for decades; some found me this year. Either way, I don't take it lightly that you trust me with your face, your stress, and your one free hour. My work is listening — to skin and to people — and you've given me thirty-plus years of both. If I don't see you before the whirlwind, reach out through the contact page or call or text (209) 639-7637. And be gentle with yourself out there.

Frequently asked questions

How far ahead should I book a December appointment?

As early as you can — ideally before the month begins. I'm a solo practitioner with one treatment room, and holiday weeks book out in clumps, party weeks first. If a specific date matters to you, call or text (209) 639-7637 rather than waiting.

Which service is best for holiday stress?

There's no single answer — a customized facial, massage therapy, and reflexology are all deeply calming, and every appointment starts with a conversation and a skin analysis to find what you need most that day. Many clients book the longer 100-minute session in December so nothing feels rushed.

How much does a session cost?

Truth In Beauty uses all-inclusive pricing: $140 for a 50-minute European facial, $170 for a 70-minute all-inclusive session, and $250 for 100 minutes. Everything your skin needs that day is included, with no upsells.

Can I give a session as a holiday gift?

Yes — gift certificates are available for any session length, and the treatment is customized for the recipient on the day they come in. Call or text (209) 639-7637 to arrange one.
