LED Light Therapy Facials: Red vs. Blue Light, Benefits, and What to Expect

By Jamie Sanchez, Licensed Esthetician · July 2026 · Truth In Beauty, Stockton CA

Of everything on my treatment menu, LED light therapy is the one clients are most skeptical about beforehand — and most surprised by afterward. No needles, no acids, no downtime; just specific wavelengths of light doing quietly remarkable things to the skin. Here's how it actually works, minus the marketing fog.

The science, in plain English

LED (light-emitting diode) therapy uses precise wavelengths of visible light, each reaching a different depth of the skin:

Blue light (~415 nm): the acne wavelength

Blue light works at the surface, where it's absorbed by the bacteria most responsible for inflammatory acne. The light triggers a reaction inside the bacteria that destroys them — without irritating the surrounding skin. For clients with active breakouts (including many of my teen clients), it's a gentle alternative to harsh topicals.

Red light (~630–660 nm): the collagen wavelength

Red light penetrates deeper, into the dermis, where it energizes skin cells and stimulates fibroblasts — the cells that make collagen and elastin. Over a series of sessions this translates to firmer texture, softer fine lines, calmer redness and a healthy glow. It also speeds recovery, which is why I often layer it after exfoliating treatments.

What LED is genuinely good for

And to be honest about the limits: LED won't replace a peel for deep pigmentation, and one session isn't a facelift. It's a consistency treatment — gentle, cumulative, and genuinely effective when done regularly.

What a session looks like at Truth In Beauty

LED is part of my all-inclusive menu, so it's never an upsell — if your skin will benefit, we simply include it. After cleansing (and any exfoliation your skin needs that day), you relax under the light panel for 15–20 minutes. It feels like lying in gentle, warm daylight. Most clients describe it as the most relaxing part of the appointment.

Because it's so gentle, LED is also one of the few advanced treatments I can adapt for oncology clients — always with their care team's approval.

How often should you come?

For acne: short, frequent series work best at first — then maintenance. For collagen and anti-aging: regular monthly sessions folded into your facial rhythm. We'll set the cadence at your first all-inclusive session based on how your skin responds.

Frequently asked questions

What does an LED light therapy facial do?

Blue LED light targets acne-causing bacteria on the skin's surface, while red LED light penetrates deeper to stimulate collagen production, calm inflammation and soften fine lines. It's painless, needle-free, and has no downtime.

How many LED sessions do I need to see results?

Most people notice calmer, brighter skin after a single session, but cumulative results — fewer breakouts, softer lines — typically build over a series of regular treatments, often every 1–4 weeks depending on your goals.

Is LED light therapy safe?

LED therapy is non-invasive, doesn't use UV light, and is considered very safe for most skin types and tones. It should be avoided or cleared with a doctor if you take photosensitizing medication or have certain light-sensitive conditions.

Does LED light therapy hurt?

No — you'll feel gentle warmth at most. Many clients find it deeply relaxing; it's often the part of the facial where people fall asleep.
