Welcome to Peel Season: Why Fall Is the Best Time for Chemical Peels

By Jamie Sanchez, Licensed Esthetician · September 2024 · Truth In Beauty, Stockton CA

Estheticians have seasons the way farmers do, and September marks the start of my favorite one: peel season. From now through winter, the conditions for chemical peels are as good as they get — and after the summer Stockton just had, most of the faces on my table have some repair work waiting.

Why fall is peel season

Two reasons, and they're both about the sun. First, freshly peeled skin is temporarily more sensitive to UV. Revealing that newer skin during a Central Valley July, with its relentless sun and triple-digit heat, means fighting your own results. In fall the UV index drops, the days shorten, and your new skin gets to heal in friendlier conditions.

Second, summer is when the damage happens — fall is when we can finally see it and treat it. Sun exposure leaves behind uneven tone, rough texture and pigment that keeps developing for weeks after the tan fades. September gives us a clear picture of what the season left behind.

What summer left on your skin

When I do a skin analysis this time of year, the usual suspects appear: sun spots making their debut, tan lines that turned into uneven tone, texture that feels like fine sandpaper, and congestion from three months of sweat and sunscreen. None of this is a moral failing — it's just August. Peels are one of my most efficient tools for clearing it, dissolving the buildup of dead, damaged surface cells so healthier skin can take over.

If you want the full plain-English breakdown of how glycolic, lactic, salicylic and TCA peels differ, I wrote Chemical Peels 101 earlier this year. The short version: peels come in many strengths and personalities, and the right one is chosen for your skin, not off a shelf.

Think in series, not single peels

Here's the honest expectation-setting: one peel gives you a lovely, brighter week. A series gives you different skin. For real goals — softening sun damage, smoothing texture, evening tone — I typically plan three to six peels spaced a few weeks apart. Each round works a little deeper into the story your skin is telling, and we adjust strength as we go based on how you respond.

That's also why fall is the strategic start line. Begin in September or October and the full series fits neatly inside the low-UV months, when results build best. Because my pricing is all-inclusive, a peel series doesn't mean a stack of add-on charges — you book your time, and the peel is simply what your skin gets that day.

The holiday runway math

Now count backwards with me. Holiday parties start in early December. A peel series takes roughly two to three months. Skin looks its absolute best a couple of weeks after the final peel, once every trace of flaking is gone. Start in mid-September, and your best skin of the year walks into the holidays right on cue. Start in November, and you're choosing between skipping the series or flaking gently into the eggnog.

So if a peel series has been on your mind, this is the month to look over the options and get the first appointment on the calendar. Fall books up faster than people expect — the other thing about peel season is that I'm not the only one who knows about it.

A little prep goes a long way, too. In the week before your first peel, keep your routine gentle — no scrubs, no strong at-home acids, and mention any retinoid products when you book so we can time things safely. Arrive with honest answers about what your skin has been up to, and I'll handle the rest. Between now and your appointment, sunscreen daily; it makes every peel we do work better.

Frequently asked questions

How many peels will I need to see results?

One peel gives a fresh, brighter look; a series builds real change. For goals like sun damage, texture or uneven tone, I typically plan a series of three to six peels spaced a few weeks apart, adjusting strength as your skin shows me how it responds.

How much does a chemical peel cost at Truth In Beauty?

Peels are part of my all-inclusive model — you book the time (50 minutes for $140, 70 for $170, or 100 for $250) and any treatment your skin needs that day, including a peel, is included. There's no separate peel menu and no add-on charges.

Will my face actually peel? How much downtime is there?

Usually far less than people fear. Most light peels cause mild flaking for a few days, or sometimes none at all — the work still happens under the surface. Deeper peels bring more visible peeling, and we discuss exactly what to expect before anything touches your skin.

Can I get a peel if I spend a lot of time outdoors?

Yes, but the deal is non-negotiable: freshly peeled skin must be protected with daily broad-spectrum sunscreen and sensible sun habits. If your work or lifestyle keeps you in full sun all day with no protection possible, we'll choose gentler options instead.
