The Fall Reset: Undoing a Summer of Sun

By Jamie Sanchez, Licensed Esthetician · September 2025 · Truth In Beauty, Stockton CA

September in the Central Valley is a strange little season. The calendar says fall, the afternoons still say summer, and your skin is stuck somewhere in between — a little tan, a little rough, a little tired. After thirty years in aesthetics, I've come to think of September as the repair month: the moment we stop defending against the sun and start undoing what it did. Here's how I approach a proper fall reset, in the order that actually works.

Start with an honest damage assessment

Before you buy a single new product, find out what summer actually left behind. For most of my Stockton clients it's some mix of the following: freckles and sun spots that darkened noticeably, rough texture across the forehead and cheekbones, dehydration that suddenly reads as fine lines, and congestion from three months of sunscreen, sweat and pool water layered together.

Each of those calls for a different fix, which is why guessing gets expensive. Every appointment at my studio begins with a professional skin analysis — included in every facial, never an add-on — and September is when that analysis earns its keep. Once we know whether your skin needs pigment work, barrier repair or simply a deep clean, the season gets a plan instead of a shopping spree. You can browse everything I offer on the services page.

Rebuild the moisture you lost

Heat, air conditioning and swimming all pull water out of the skin, and dehydrated skin exaggerates every other problem — lines look deeper, texture looks rougher, and even oily skin overproduces to compensate. Fall is the time to bring back richer moisturizers in the evening, add a hydrating serum underneath, and let a professional hydrating treatment do the heavy lifting once the analysis confirms what's missing. Clients are often surprised how much of their "sun damage" turns out to be plain thirst; skin that's properly hydrated in October photographs noticeably better in December.

Reintroduce exfoliation gradually

If you eased off strong exfoliants during the summer heat — good instinct — don't celebrate fall by scrubbing it all off in one ambitious weekend. Skin that spent months in sun and air conditioning needs an on-ramp. I like to restart with fruit enzymes or a mild lactic treatment, watch how the skin responds for a week or two, then step things up from there. The goal is steady turnover, not a scorched-earth catch-up session. Over-exfoliating dehydrated September skin is the fastest route to spending October red and stinging.

Peel season officially opens

Cooler weather and shorter days mean lower UV, and lower UV means peels can heal without fresh sun exposure undoing the work. I laid out the logic in why fall is the best time for chemical peels, and it still holds: if pigmentation or texture is your target, a series of peels spaced a few weeks apart — running from now into winter — will outperform any single heroic treatment. September is when we map that series out, so it finishes before your holiday calendar takes over.

Plan your runway to the holidays

It sounds early, but the holidays are closer than your calendar admits. Thanksgiving sits about ten weeks from the start of September, and the party season follows right behind it. The deeper corrective work — peel series, pigment treatment, serious resurfacing — belongs in September and October, so that November and December can be reserved for gentle, glow-focused maintenance.

Because my pricing is all-inclusive, planning a fall series is refreshingly simple: you book 50, 70 or 100 minutes, and every treatment your skin needs that day is included. No menu math, no upsells mid-appointment. If you're not sure where to start, get in touch and we'll sequence it together. Summer was fun. Now let's clean up after it.

Frequently asked questions

When can I start chemical peels after summer?

Once the intense sun eases and you can commit to daily sunscreen — in the Central Valley that usually means late September into October. We confirm your skin is calm and hydrated during a skin analysis before scheduling any peel.

Can one facial undo a summer of sun damage?

No, and be wary of anyone who promises otherwise. A single facial restores hydration and glow, but pigment and texture changes take a series of treatments over several months, supported by daily sunscreen.

What does a fall reset facial cost in Stockton?

At Truth In Beauty every appointment is all-inclusive: 50 minutes is $140, 70 minutes is $170 and 100 minutes is $250. Whatever your skin needs that day — enzymes, hydration, gentle exfoliation — is included, along with a professional skin analysis.

Do I still need sunscreen once summer ends?

Yes. UV drops in fall but never disappears, and it will quietly undo the results of every corrective treatment if you skip it. Daily SPF is what protects the work we do in the treatment room.
