December Self-Care: Why the Quietest Appointment Is the Best One

By Jamie Sanchez, Licensed Esthetician · December 2025 · Truth In Beauty, Stockton CA

There's a stretch of days we're in right now, between Christmas and New Year's, when nobody is entirely sure what day of the week it is. The leftovers are dwindling, the wrapping paper is (mostly) cleaned up, and the world runs at half speed. After 30 years in aesthetics, I can tell you it's also the best-kept secret on my calendar.

The quiet week

Most of the year, people book around their obligations. This week, obligations take a nap. The clients who come in during the quiet days get something rare: an unhurried session, a studio with no one waiting, and a version of me that isn't racing a holiday rush, because the rush already happened. As a solo practitioner, I don't run treatment rooms like an assembly line at any time of year, but this week the calm is almost absurd. It's my favorite kind of appointment to give.

There's a texture to these sessions that's hard to describe until you've had one. Nobody's phone is buzzing with party logistics. No one is squeezing you in before a school pickup. The massage portions stretch a little longer, the conversation (if you want one — silence is equally welcome) meanders, and you leave without checking your watch once. In a season built entirely around doing things for other people, that hour is conspicuously, gloriously yours.

What the holidays did to your skin

Let's be honest about the last six weeks: sugar at every gathering, a bit more wine than usual, late nights, travel, dry heated air, and stress wearing a festive sweater. Skin keeps receipts. By late December most faces I see are dehydrated, puffy, congested around the chin and jaw, and dull in a way that no highlighter can outwork. None of this is a moral failing. It's December. But it is fixable, and faster than you'd think.

The dryness deserves special mention if you traveled. Airplane cabins are deserts with seatbelts, and sleeping in a guest room next to a space heater finishes the job. Add the makeup marathon of party season, often removed at 1 a.m. with whatever was nearest, and you have skin that has been thoroughly, understandably neglected. It doesn't need punishment in January. It needs water, gentleness, and about an hour of someone's full attention.

What a rescue session looks like

Every appointment at my Stockton studio starts with a professional skin analysis, and this week that analysis usually points the same direction: replace water, clear congestion gently, and calm everything down. That might mean a deeply hydrating facial, light enzyme exfoliation, a warm mask, and unhurried facial massage to move the puffiness along. Because my pricing is all-inclusive, we choose whatever your skin needs that day without a single add-on charge. You book the time; the treatment builds itself around you.

I wrote back in November about booking time for yourself before the season swallows you. If the season swallowed you anyway, consider this week your second chance.

Start January ahead, not behind

Here's the quiet-week math I love: come in before New Year's, and you walk into January with the reset already done. While everyone else is writing resolutions about the skincare routine they'll start "soon," yours has already started, on a treatment bed, with someone else doing the work. That's not cheating. That's strategy. January calendars fill up fast once resolution season kicks in, so the person who books during the sleepy week is, quietly, the smartest one on my schedule.

And if Santa left a Truth In Beauty gift certificate in your stocking, this is a wonderful time to use it. Reach out, or call or text me at (209) 639-7637, and we'll find you a quiet slot before the calendar flips.

The holidays ask a lot of you. The week after them asks nothing. Take one of those hours for yourself. Your skin, and your nervous system, will start the new year grateful.

Frequently asked questions

Are you open between Christmas and New Year's?

My regular hours are Tuesday through Friday 9:00 to 6:00 and Saturday 9:00 to 2:00. Holiday weeks can shift a little, so the surest way to grab a spot is to call or text (209) 639-7637 or book online, and I will confirm the current week's availability.

What is the best treatment after holiday overindulgence?

It depends on what your skin shows on the day, which is why every session starts with a skin analysis. Most post-holiday skin needs deep hydration, gentle exfoliation to clear congestion, and massage to move puffiness along. We decide together once I have seen your skin.

Can I use a gift certificate I received for Christmas?

Absolutely, and the quiet week is a lovely time to redeem it. Call or text (209) 639-7637 to schedule, mention the gift certificate, and we will set up your session.

How much does a December appointment cost?

The same as any other time of year, because pricing at Truth In Beauty is all-inclusive: a 50-minute European facial is $140, a 70-minute all-inclusive session is $170, and a 100-minute session is $250. Everything your skin needs that day is included, with no upsells.
