Spray Tan Season: Building Your Glow Before Summer

By Jamie Sanchez, Licensed Esthetician · May 2026 · Truth In Beauty, Stockton CA

Memorial Day is around the corner, the pools are opening, and the annual question has returned to my treatment room: "How do I get some color before summer?" After 30 years of watching sun damage walk through my door — the spots, the leathery texture, the lines that arrived a decade early — my answer never changes. The only safe tan is the one that comes out of an airbrush. Here's how to build one and keep it gorgeous all season.

The tan without the bill that comes due

A real suntan is your skin producing pigment in self-defense — visible damage, every single time, no exceptions. An airbrush spray tan gives you the color with none of the injury: the solution reacts with the very top layer of your skin to develop a natural-looking bronze over several hours. Because it's applied by hand, it's customized — the depth of color, the blending, the tricky spots like ankles and wrists that booth tans famously botch.

And no, it doesn't turn anyone orange anymore. That reputation belongs to a previous era of formulas and to at-home mishaps, not to a professional application.

I've spent three decades watching the difference between the skin of people who tanned in the sun through their twenties and the skin of people who didn't. The gap is not subtle. That's why I treat spray tanning as skincare, not vanity — every summer you borrow your color from a bottle instead of the sun is a summer your future skin doesn't have to pay for.

Prep makes or breaks the glow

The secret to a spray tan that looks like you were simply born lucky is what happens before the appointment. I wrote a complete walkthrough in my spray tan prep and aftercare guide, but the essentials are simple:

The maintenance rhythm: every two to three weeks

One tan is an event; a summer glow is a rhythm. Booking every two to three weeks keeps your color continuous without buildup. That spacing matters: it lets each tan fade most of the way out, gives you a window to exfoliate thoroughly, and starts every new session on a clean canvas. Layering fresh solution over a patchy old tan is how the dreaded crocodile look happens — and I refuse to be responsible for crocodiles at your barbecue.

The rhythm also plays nicely with the rest of your routine. Waxing should happen at least a day before a tan, facials are best a few days ahead, and exfoliating treatments fit naturally into the fade window between sessions. If you're juggling several services, tell me — sequencing them correctly is half the craft.

If you like planning ahead, standing appointments are the easy answer — check the details on my services page or get in touch and we'll map your summer.

Managing the fade

Between sessions, your job is moisture. Hydrated skin holds color longer and releases it evenly; dry skin sheds it in patches. Moisturize daily, favor quick showers over long hot soaks, pat dry instead of scrubbing, and go easy on pool chlorine right after a fresh application. When the fade begins around day seven, a gentle all-over exfoliation helps it exit gracefully instead of clinging to elbows and knees.

One thing your tan will never do: protect you from the sun. It's color, not coverage — you still need broad-spectrum SPF every day of a Stockton summer. Glow responsibly.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an airbrush spray tan last?

Typically about a week to ten days, depending on your skin and aftercare. Daily moisturizing, quick showers instead of long soaks, and gentle treatment of the skin all stretch the glow toward the longer end.

How often should I get a spray tan during summer?

Every two to three weeks keeps the color even and continuous. That cadence lets each tan fade gracefully, gives you a chance to exfoliate fully between sessions, and starts every new application on fresh, even skin.

Does a spray tan protect me from sunburn?

No — this matters. A spray tan is color only, with zero sun protection. You still need broad-spectrum sunscreen every day, especially through a Stockton summer. Think of the tan as the look and SPF as the shield.

How should I prep for my spray tan appointment?

Exfoliate the day before, then arrive with clean, bare skin — no lotion, oil, makeup or deodorant, which can block or streak the solution. Wear loose, dark clothing home and let the color develop before showering, per your appointment-day instructions.
